Steph Roberts

museums & galleries

I provide support for all kinds of museum projects from collection research and exhibition curation, to workshops and learning resources, specialising in visual arts engagement.

I have extensive experience of working in the sector, including as Senior Curator of Art and Learning & Engagement Officer at Museum Wales.

I aim to create opportunities for people from all walks of life to connect with collections, while challenging the barriers and power structures that keep many of us excluded.

I am particularly interested in projects that focus on (in)accessibility, such as The Blind Harpists: Another Look. I have worked on major international projects, including Kizuna: Japan | Wales | Design, and Reframing Picton, and have valuable experience of community co-creation.

artist support

Navigating the art world can feel like entering a game with secret rules especially for artists who are early career, under-represented, or disabled.

As a working-class, chronically ill person who’s worked in the arts sector for many years I want share what I’ve learnt with others, and help break down some of the barriers. I offer:

1:1 early career support

An open-ended space to chat about your future plans, opportunities, and how to navigate the sector; or to help writing artist statements, funding or open call applications. This is particularly suitable for anyone looking to work with museums or art collections in their work but are not sure where to start.

access support

Support tailored for disabled and neurodivergent artists. I use body doubling and gentle guiding to help with time planning and task completion, writing reports, funding applications or day-to-day admin. I mostly work with late-diagnosed neurodivergent artists, and those with chronic pain conditions. I am an Access Support Worker for the Arts Council of Wales.

Artist support sessions usually take place online. Prices from £25-£37.50 an hour, depending on circumstances. I’m open to discussing skill swaps for anyone who is unfunded and would struggle to pay.

audio description

I am passionate about using Audio Description to create more inclusive and collaborative experiences for blind and partially blind visitors in museums and galleries.

After training from VocalEyes, I established a popular programme of Audio Description tours at Museum Wales, which are still running today.

My main interest is in collaborative AD. This means working alongside blind and partially blind people to create Audio Descriptions together: a more inclusive way of working, which reframes blindness as creative strength. The Blind Harpists project is an example.

I have also written and recorded more traditional ADd, including recording Welsh-language descriptions for Art UK’s Superpower of Looking

If you’re an artist, gallerist or museum worker interested in exploring creative AD, I’d love to hear from you!

writing & editorial

I write on topics relating to disability, chronic illness and the visual arts – and sometimes all three at once!

As Commissioning Editor for Art UK in 2023-6 I supported over 100 writers to publish articles about Welsh art, and Drawings. These have attracted over 100,000 views and counting.

I was part of Literature Wales x Disability Arts Cymru’s Reinventing the Protagonist in 2024-5, a disability-centred writers’ development programme.

Recent writing on my own lived experience of chronic illness has been published in Fit Notes: Feminist Writing on Illness and Work (Ache, 2025) and CELF (Museum Wales x Disability Arts Cymru commission, 2025).

I am open to writing commissions and blogs, editorial support, and sensitivity reads.

lived experience adviser

I advocate for disability justice, and raising awareness of (in)accessibility, disability and chronic illness.

I provide lived experience advice to help organisations identify and overcome barriers, and to uplift and advocate for the work of disabled artists and writers.

I was part of Clore Leadership’s Inclusive Cultures (2024), a disabled-led professional development programme for cultural leaders taking steps towards systemic change.

I am Lived Experience Advisor for Designability, championing accessible design products and services; and have also been on selection panels and working groups for Unlimited’s UK Partner commissions (2025); SHAPE Arts Disability Arts Movement Venice Biennale exhibition (2024); Disability Arts Cymru’s Creativity is Mistakes (2023); and the UKRI / AHRC ‘Mobilising Community Assets to Tackle Health Inequalities’ research.
