Steph Roberts

museums & galleries

I have almost two decade’s rich and varied experience working in the museum sector. I have held curatorial, and learning and engagement positions at Amgueddfa Cymru, including Senior Curator of Art. As a freelancer I have worked with many museums and art organisations across Wales, including Newport Museum & Art Gallery, Cyfarthfa Castle, Artes Mundi, and Paintings in Hospitals.

I provide support for all kinds of projects: from collection research and exhibition curation to creating bespoke learning resources (fun family trails, learning packs, gallery interpretation). I have over 5 years’ experience delivering art-based programmes for wellbeing.

I am particularly interested in projects that make collections more accessible and disrupt systems of exclusion; or ones that create space for alternative ways of thinking.

I have experience of delivering ambitious co-curation and co-creation programmes, which challenge power imbalances within traditional museum hierarchies, such as The Blind Harpists: Another Look.

I have worked on major international projects, including Kizuna: Japan | Wales | Design exhibition, and Reframing Picton a sector-challenging anti-colonial commissioning project at Amgueddfa Cymru.

artist support

Navigating the art world can feel like entering a secret game where nobody’s taught you the rules especially if you’re early career, or face barriers due to disability. It can be overwhelming!

I am an Access Support Worker for the Arts Council of Wales, and have been supporting individual artists for two years. I have helped secure over £15,000 of funding.

As a working-class, chronically ill person who’s worked in the arts sector for many years I’ve learnt how things work, and want to share what I’ve learnt with others. I offer:

1:1 Early Career Support

An open-ended space to chat about your future plans, opportunities, and how to navigate the sector; or to help writing artist statements, funding or open call applications. This is particularly suitable for anyone looking to engage with museum collections and art galleries in their work.

Access Support for disabled or neurodivergent artists

I use body doubling and gentle guiding to help with time planning and task completion, support writing reports, funding applications or day-to-day admin, and gentle prompts to help you get that thing you’ve been putting off finally done! I mostly have experience working with late-diagnosed neurodivergent artists, and those with chronic conditions.

Sessions happen 1:1, over Zoom, and prices range from £25-£40 an hour depending on circumstances. I’m open to skill swaps if you’re unfunded and would struggle to pay.

audio description

I set up and established a highly popular programme of Audio Description tours at Museum Wales, after being trained by VocalEyes. Since then I have become passionate about Audio Description, and how it can be used in museums and galleries to create more inclusive experiences for blind and partially blind visitors.

My main interest is in collaborative AD, where I work alongside blind and partially blind individuals to co-create Audio Descriptions. This way of working is inclusive, creative and alive, reframing blindness as a creative strength. The Blind Harpists project is an example.

I have also written and recorded more traditional Audio Descriptions. I recently recorded Welsh-language ADs for Art UK’s Superpower of Looking resources.

I can provide online training or tailored support for artists or organisations looking to introduce AD into their work.

If you’re an artist, gallerist or museum worker interested in exploring creative AD with me, I’d love to hear from you!

writing & editorial

I am a skilled editor and writer, mainly covering topics relating to disability, chronic illness and the visual arts – and often all three at once!

As Commissioning Editor for Art UK, I supported over 100 writers to publish long-form articles about art and visual culture, with a specific focus on Welsh writing, and articles about Drawing as a creative practice.

I was part of Literature Wales x Disability Arts Cymru’s Reinventing the Protagonist cohort in 2024-5, a disability-centred writers’ development programme.

Recent writing on chronic illness has been published in the anthology Fit Notes: Feminist Writing on Illness and Work (Ache, 2025) and CELF (Museum Wales x Disability Arts Cymru commission, 2025)

I am available for writing commissions and blogs, editorial support, and sensitivity reads.

lived experience adviser

I am passionate about raising awareness of issues relating to the lived experience of disability and chronic illness. I can provide lived experience advice and guidance to help organisations identify and overcome barriers, and to uplift and advocate the work of disabled artists and writers.

I was part of Clore Leadership’s Inclusive Cultures cohort in 2024, a disabled-led professional development programme designed for cultural leaders seeking to take steps towards systemic change.

Since 2025 I have been a Lived Experience Advisor for Designability, championing accessible design products and services.

I have also been on lived experience panels for Unlimited’s UK Partner commissions (2025); SHAPE Arts for their Disability Arts Movement Venice Biennale exhibition (2024); Disability Arts Cymru’s Creativity is Mistakes (2023); and the UKRI / AHRC ‘Mobilising Community Assets to Tackle Health Inequalities’ research funding.
